International journal group updates guidelines on registration of clinical trials

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) updates its policy for registration of clinical trials, in an editorial appearing today on the organization's Web site and on the Web sites of participating journals. The update aligns ICMJE policy with the World Health Organization Clinical Trials Platform (WHO ICTRP).

   Researchers from the UPenn's Abramson Cancer Center announced today that findings from two international clinical trials show unprecedented survival for patients with myeloma, a cancer the blood-making cells of bone marrow. Findings show that with the oral drug lenalidomide, in combination with dexamethasone, patients significantly improved by all measures where previous treatments had failed -- including a median survival of nearly three years -- the longest median survival known for this difficult to treat patient group.

   A paper appearing this week in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Clinical Trials presents findings from a large National Institutes of Health sponsored trial regarding the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular safety of two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, celecoxib and naproxen. The trial was initially conducted to test whether these drugs might prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Results from the clinical trial, CHICAGO (Carotid intima-media tHICkness in Atherosclerosis using pioGlitazOne), are part of a late-breaker presentation at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2006, coincidentally being held in Chicago, and coincide with an early online issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
