A recent study by Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) finds children born with low birth weight (LBW) who suffered child abuse are substantially more likely to develop psychological problems such as depression and social dysfunction in adolescence and adulthood. The study, appearing in the Feb. 5, 2007, issue of the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, is the first to investigate the possible interaction between LBW and later adversity.

A newly identified gene mutation helps explain a subset of cases of osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, whose origin had until now remained mysterious. Identifying the new mutation is important because children with the disorder, whose bones break easily, are sometimes mistaken as victims of child abuse -- particularly those who do not carry the genetic mutation known to cause most cases of brittle bone disease.

Authors looked at 20,000 mothers and children, and found treating gestational diabetes lowers the child's risk of obesity to same level of a mother with normal blood sugar levels.
