- Study led by Scripps Research scientist reveals little-known cell networks vital to circadian rhythm
05-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a wide-ranging systems biology study of circadian rhythm, a multi-institutional collaboration led by Scripps Research Institute Professor Steve Kay has uncovered some little-known cellular mechanisms for sustaining circadian rhythm and limiting the impact of genetic clock mutations in mammals. The new findings could have important implications for future circadian studies, and point researchers toward new ways to manipulate human circadian rhythm at the molecular level to treat diseases such as bipolar disorder.

- Genetic roots of bipolar disorder revealed by first genome-wide study of illness
05-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
Several specific genes are implicated in bipolar disorder. This was the first genome-wide "association" study of the illness. Association studies help determine if specific diseases are associated with genes. One of the genes implicated produces a protein that could be a target for developing better medications for the disorder.

- UCLA scientists identify new genetic link to autism
01-10-2008 · EurekAlert!
UCLA scientists used language onset -- the age when a child speaks his first word -- as a tool for identifying a new gene linked to autism. The team also discovered that the gene is most active in developing brain regions involved with language and thought. Interestingly, evidence for the genetic link came from the DNA of families with autistic boys, not those with autistic girls.
