   Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Rice University have created the darkest material ever made by man. The material, a thin coating comprised of low-density arrays of loosely vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes, absorbs more than 99.9 percent of light and one day could be used to boost the effectiveness and efficiency of solar energy conversion, infrared sensors and other devices. The researchers who developed the material have applied for a Guinness World Record for their efforts.

   A group of researchers headed by Dr. Benny Pinkas from the department of computer science at the University of Haifa succeeded in finding a security vulnerability in Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system. The significance of the loophole: e-mails, passwords, credit card numbers, if they were typed into the computer, and actually all correspondence that emanated from a computer using Windows 2000 is susceptible to tracking.

   Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Polyset Co. have developed a new inexpensive, quick-drying polymer that could lead to dramatic cost savings and efficiency gains in semiconductor manufacturing and computer chip packaging. Along with allowing enhanced performance and cost savings for conventional photolithography processes, the new material, called polyset epoxy siloxane, should also enable a new generation of lower-cost, on-chip nanoimprinting lithography technology, according to the researchers.

    Preliminary results from clinical trials testing two different pandemic flu vaccine approaches -- one a prime-boost strategy using different subtypes of H5N1 vaccines, the other an H5N1 vaccine delivered into the skin rather than the muscle -- will be presented at the 44th Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America being held in Toronto on Oct. 12-15. The presentations are scheduled for a late-breaker session on Friday afternoon, Oct. 13.
