ACP supports improved access to information on relative strengths and weaknesses

"ACP strongly supports Congressional efforts to provide Medicare and all stakeholders within the health care community with improved access to information about the relative strengths and weaknesses of various clinical products, procedures and services," David C. Dale, MD, FACP, president of the ACP, told the House Committee on Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health today.

    A study, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, and conducted by biologists at the University of Reading and computer scientists at the University of Cardiff, has revealed large gaps in data available to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility -- the world's largest single data network which gives access to millions of current digitised biodiversity records. Research published in the new online open access journal BMC Medical Genomics reveals a model that may enable more accurate prediction of the risk of prostate cancer progression. By combining the Gleason score (a pathological score given to prostate cancer based on its microscopic appearance) with structured data from biomarker assessments, the researchers have developed a model for predicting the likelihood of prostate cancer virulence.

Recent work of a team led by Stoyno Stoynov, working at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, suggests that thermodynamic stability of DNA/DNA and RNA/DNA duplexes influences mRNA transcription. The manuscript appears in the March 14 issue of the international, peer-reviewed, open-access online journal PLoS ONE.
