Matter flashed at ultra speed
06-12-2007 · EurekAlert!Using a robotic telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory, astronomers have for the first time measured the velocity of the explosions known as gamma-ray bursts. The material is travelling at the extraordinary speed of more than 99.999 percent of the velocity of light, the maximum speed limit in the universe.

- Asymmetric ashes
11-30-2006 · EurekAlert!
Astronomers are reporting remarkable new findings that shed light on a decade-long debate about one kind of supernovae, the explosions that mark a star's final demise: Does the star die in a slow burn or with a fast bang? From their observations, the scientists find that the matter ejected by the explosion shows significant peripheral asymmetry but a nearly spherical interior, most likely implying that the explosion finally propagates at supersonic speed.

- Machine learning could speed up radiation therapy for cancer patients
02-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new computer-based technique could eliminate hours of manual adjustment associated with a popular cancer treatment. In a paper published in the February 7 issue of Physics in Medicine and Biology, researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center describe an approach that has the potential to automatically determine acceptable radiation plans in a matter of minutes, without compromising the quality of treatment.

- In tiny supercooled clouds, physicists exchange light and matter
02-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Physicists have for the first time stopped and extinguished a light pulse in one part of space and then revived it in a completely separate location. They accomplished this feat by completely converting the light pulse into matter that travels between the two locations and is subsequently changed back to light.Matter, unlike light, can easily be manipulated, and the experiments provide a powerful means to control optical information.

- Mechanics meets chemistry in new way to manipulate matter
03-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have found a novel way to manipulate matter and drive chemical reactions along a desired direction. The new technique utilizes mechanical force to alter the course of chemical reactions and yield products not obtainable through conventional conditions.

- Smelling for first time results from knowing abnormalities in congenital loss of smell
04-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
New discoveries about the biochemical basis of the majority of cases of the congenital inability to smell any odor, no matter how strong, have enabled their discoverer, Dr. Robert I. Henkin, director of the Taste and Smell Clinic in Washington, D.C., to treat such patients, enabling them to smell something for the first time in their lives.

- Men worry more about penile size than women, says 60-year-old research review
05-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
Does size matter? Men feel better if they are well-endowed but women don't always agree that bigger is better. Men with average-sized penises are much more likely to suffer from small penis syndrome. And some even use weights or encourage snakes to bite them to make themselves bigger, according to a research review spanning more than 60 years.
