The wider view from a detailed focus
06-13-2007 · EurekAlert!A major study of the organization and regulation of the human genome published today changes our concept of how our genome works. The exhaustive analysis of 1 percent of the genome gives an extensive view of genetic activity alongside the cellular machinery that allows DNA to be read and replicated. The complex tapestry of interwoven elements revealed today suggests that "our perspective of transcription and genes may have to evolve," the researchers state.

- New Adaptive Optics technique demonstrated
03-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
On the evening of 25 March 2007, the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator (MAD) achieved First Light at the Visitor Focus of Melipal, the third Unit Telescope of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). MAD allowed the scientists to obtain images corrected for the blurring effect of atmospheric turbulence over the full 2x2 arcminute field of view. This world premiere shows the promises of a crucial technology for Extremely Large Telescopes.

- New technique provides continual view of approaching hurricanes
05-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
Hurricane forecasters will test a new technique this summer that provides a detailed 3-D view of an approaching storm every six minutes and shows whether the storm is gathering strength as it nears land. The technique, which relies on existing coastal radars, will help meteorologists quickly alert coastal communities.

- Scientists outline novel approach to ecosystem management
01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!
A team of scientists present a new approach to management efforts in a paper posted this week on Frontiers e-View, the online pre-press publication site of Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, published by the Ecological Society of America. The researchers suggest that such efforts should focus less on restoring ecosystems to their original state and more on sustaining new, healthy ecosystems that are resilient to further environmental change.

- Getting a feel for the nano world
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
When it comes to research at the nanoscale, vision is not necessarily an advantage. The subjects are so small, no one can see them. To encourage people with visual impairments to pursue fields in nanotechnology, educators have developed a way to craft accurate, detailed and touch-friendly models of nanoscale objects like carbon nanofibers, allowing the students to "see" those objects for the first time.
