First prospective study shows improvement of rheumatoid arthritis during pregnancy
06-14-2007 · EurekAlert!Disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is significantly reduced during pregnancy, according to new data presented today at EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain. In the study, RA improved significantly from the first trimester to the third trimester of the participants' pregnancy and this effect extended into the postpartum stage.

Data from a study at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, show that women receive anti-TNFs -- very effective but expensive modern medications against this disease -- at a higher perceived level of disease activity, and when they are reporting more severe pain than their male counterparts.

Fewer rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with the drug hydroxychloroquine went on to develop diabetes compared to those who never took the drug, according to a 20-plus-year University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine-led study reported today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In addition, those using HCQ were less likely to take medications to manage diabetes after diagnosis. The study found risk declined a dramatic 77 percent after four years of HCQ treatment.

In the study, the longer the breast feeding period, the lower the mother's risk of developing RA in later life. Comparable use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy did not show a significant effect on the risk of developing RA.
