- Genome-wide search unearths surprising clues for diabetes and triglycerides
04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists from the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, Lund University and Novartis today announced the discovery of three unsuspected regions of human DNA that contain clear genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and another that is associated with elevated blood triglycerides. The study is among the first to apply a suite of genomic resources to clinical research, including the Human Genome Project, the SNP and HapMap Projects, and genome-scale laboratory and analytical tools.

- Mice, men make livers differently
05-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists often study mice as a model for human biology and disease, because their basic biological processes are assumed to be essentially the same as those of humans. But now, a team of MIT researchers has uncovered a surprising difference. In a study of gene regulation in mouse and human liver cells, they found that master regulatory proteins function in very different ways in mice and humans.

- 'No' doesn't always mean 'no'
04-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Just because someone decides not to participate in a research project doesn't necessarily mean that they fundamentally object to taking part, a study published online in BMC Health Services Research suggests. Misunderstandings about the nature and process of a study often contribute to expressions of nonconsent, a factor that should be incorporated in the design of future studies.

- LSU professor involved in genome sequencing of the first marsupial
05-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
Since the launch of the Human Genome Project, which released a first draft of the entire sequence of human DNA in 2001, many researchers have dedicated themselves to creating a library of comprehensive, species-specific genetic sequence "maps" available for study. Scientists at LSU recently took part in a multi-institutional effort spearheaded by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University to sequence the complete genome of the gray, short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica.

- River restoration poorly coordinated, evaluated
11-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
The process of river restoration in the US is uncoordinated at almost every level. Project scales are rarely linked to goals, and evaluation is rarely reported or used to assess whether these goals are achieved. A new study published in Restoration Ecology is the first attempt to systematically determine the motivations behind river restoration throughout the US, and to assess the ways in which projects are being evaluated.
