Major increase in federal research needed to determine size of US coal reserves
06-20-2007 · EurekAlert!Because coal will continue to provide a substantial portion of US energy for at least the next several decades, a major increase in federal support for research and development is needed to ensure that this natural resource is extracted efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner, says a new congressionally mandated report from the National Research Council.

- Factors affecting kernel yield in maize
12-06-2006 · EurekAlert!
Research reported in the Plant Cell reveals important aspects of plant metabolism associated with grain filling and kernel yield in maize. The scientific breakthrough of this research is its indication that two closely related isoforms of the cytosolic enzyme glutamine synthetase determine two major and distinct yield components in maize, kernel size and kernel number. The results point to a dominant role of nitrogen retranslocation rather than carbon allocation during grain filling.

- Studies show role of age, gender, race and weight on cancer risk and treatment
05-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
While cancer has been studied extensively to determine the major contributing factors for risk and ultimate outcome, many variables still remain and doctors are puzzled by new cases that do not fit "old" protocol. Research presented today at Digestive Disease Week 2007 demonstrates improved results in determining these risks, including the relative "weight" of being heavy on risk for colon cancer; possible risk of cancer surgery among elderly individuals; and how race determines incidence as well as treatment decisions. DDW is the largest international gathering of physicians and researchers in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery.

- Space radiation threats to astronauts addressed in federal research study
10-25-2006 · EurekAlert!
A better understanding of solar storms and how best to protect astronauts from space radiation is needed as NASA pushes toward manned missions to the moon and Mars in the coming decades, according to a new National Research Council report by a committee chaired by a University of Colorado at Boulder administrator.

- Dog DNA study yields clues to diverse size of breeds
04-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study published in tomorrow's edition of the research journal Science reveals a genetic marker that may determine whether dogs are big or small, and helps answer a burning question in genetics -- how could dogs as a species have such a tremendous variation in size?

- River plants may play major role in health of ocean coastal waters
01-29-2008 · EurekAlert!
Recent research at MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering suggests how aquatic plants in rivers and streams may play a major role in the health of large areas of ocean coastal waters. The work describes the physics of water flow around aquatic plants. It may be used to guide restoration work in rivers, wetlands and coastal zones by helping ecologists determine appropriate vegetation patch length and planting density.

- Large size crucial for Amazon forest reserves
01-11-2007 · EurekAlert!
An international research team has discovered that the size of Amazon forest reserves is yet more important than previously thought. Their findings, to be published this week (Jan. 12) in the journal Science, underscore the importance of protecting the Amazon in large stretches of primary forest.

- 1 size may not fit all
10-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
In an editorial in the October issue of the journal Gastroenterology, Thomas F. Imperiale, M.D., professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Regenstrief Institute, Inc. research scientist, says that studies that can help determine who is at risk for colorectal cancer as well as who is not at risk, and how to stratify risk for each group can help determine which screening test is best for each individual and will better serve both patients and the health care system.

- Unveiling the structure of microcrystals
10-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Microcrystals take the form of tiny grains resembling powder, which is extremely difficult to study. For the first time, researchers from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique used X-ray diffraction at the synchrotron to determine the structure of microcrystal grains of one cubic micrometer. They gained a factor of a thousand on the size of the analyzable samples, opening up new research possibilities to chemists, physicists and biologists.

10-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
Greek research scientists Dr. George Gizas and Dr. Dimitrios Savvas recently conducted trials of four grades of pumice to determine the most effective particle size for growing ornamental plants and vegetables in soilless conditions. Pumice, an inert mineral of volcanic origin, has been used for centuries as a growing medium. Readily available in many countries including Italy, Greece, Israel and Iceland, pumice is relatively inexpensive and can be disposed of without harming the environment.
