- Harvard scientists partner to develop and distribute new tuberculosis vaccine
02-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
Bioengineers and public health researchers at Harvard University have developed a novel spraying method for delivering the most common tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, providing a new low-cost and scaleable technique that offers needle-free delivery and greater stability at room temperature than existing methods. The process could one day provide a better approach for vaccination against TB and help prevent the related spread of HIV/AIDS in the developing world.

- The insides of clouds may be the key to climate change
02-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
As climate change scientists develop ever more sophisticated climate models to project an expected path of temperature change, it is becoming increasingly important to include the effects of aerosols on clouds, according to Joyce E. Penner, a leading atmospheric scientist at the University of Michigan.

- NASA'S live tropical sea surface temperature Web site gives climate, hurricane clues
10-12-2006 · EurekAlert!
Sea surface temperatures give scientists information about ocean currents, climate, climate change and how a hurricane may evolve. Now, NASA has a Web page that provides frequent updates on changing ocean temperatures.

- Increased hurricane activity linked to sea surface warming
01-30-2008 · EurekAlert!
The link between changes in the temperature of the sea’s surface and increases in North Atlantic hurricane activity has been quantified for the first time. The research - carried out by scientists at UCL and due to be published in Nature on Jan. 31 -- shows that a 0.5 C increase in sea surface temperature can be associated with a ~40 per cent increase in hurricane activity.

- Antarctic life hung by a thread during ice ages
02-15-2008 · EurekAlert!
A report published in the March issue of Ecology argues that the extreme cold and environmental conditions of past Ice Ages have been even more severe than seen today and changed life at the Antarctic, forcing the migration of many animals such as penguins, whales and seals. Understanding the changes of the past may help scientists to determine how the anticipated temperature increases of the future will work to further transform this continent.

- 'Twinkle after effect' can help retinal patients detect vision loss quickly and cheaply
10-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists at Schepens Eye Research Institute have discovered a simple and inexpensive way for patients with retinal and other eye disease to keep track of changes in their vision loss. In a study published in this week's PLoS One (Oct. 24, 2007) they demonstrate that a compelling visual illusion known as the induced twinkle after-effect can accurately identify the location and breadth of actual blind spots in people with retinal disease

- Environmental epigenetics has potential for preventing and treating disease
01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!
New research on environmental influences on health and disease has begun to shed light on why genetically identical individuals demonstrate different characteristics, such as susceptibility to disease. Scientists have found that environmental exposure to nutritional, chemical and physical factors can alter the epigenome. Literally meaning "above the genome," the epigenome refers to differences in gene expression that are inherited without changing the sequence of DNA.
