Adults who go to bed lonely get stress hormone boost next morning
10-30-2006 · EurekAlert!A study that takes a rare look at the physiological, social and emotional dynamics of day-to-day experiences in real-life settings shows that when older adults go to bed lonely, sad or overwhelmed, they have elevated levels of cortisol shortly after waking the next morning. This cues the body on a day-to-day basis that it is time to rev up to deal with loneliness and other negative experiences, according to the Northwestern University researcher who led the study.

Some forms of a gene that controls the body's response to stress hormones appear to protect adults who were abused in childhood from depression, psychiatrists have found. People who had been abused as children and who carried the most protective forms of the gene, called corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor one, had markedly lower measures of depression, compared with people with less protective forms.

This is the first national study to suggest that depression alone -- and not lifestyle factors like being overweight -- can trigger diabetes in adults 65 and older, a population with a high prevalence of diabetes and depression.
