Bright future for nano-sized light source
06-28-2007 · EurekAlert!A bio-friendly nano-sized light source capable of emitting coherent light across the visible spectrum has been invented by researchers with the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the University of California at Berkeley. Among the many potential applications of this nano-sized light source, once the technology is refined, are single cell endoscopy and other forms of subwavelength bio-imaging, integrated circuitry for nanophotonic technology and new advanced methods of cyber cryptography.

- Big news at Brookhaven
07-18-2007 · Brookhaven National Laboratory
In some future history of America's struggle to find new forms of energy, yesterday will stand out in red letters. It was the day the Department of Energy announced that a new light source, capable of illuminating objects as small as a billionth of a meter, will be built right here on Long Island, at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This is huge.

- Scientists model a cornucopia of Earth-sized planets
09-24-2007 · EurekAlert!
In the Star Wars movies fictional planets are covered with forests, oceans, deserts, and volcanoes. But new models from a team of MIT, NASA, and Carnegie scientists begin to describe an even wider range of Earth-size planets that astronomers might actually be able to find in the near future.

- To the Edge of Melting
02-02-2007 · Brookhaven National Laboratory
Scientists have used advanced tools to see the very first instants of change in a solid brought to the edge of melting. Peter Siddons, physicist at Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source, designed and built the x-ray detectors for an x-ray source at SLAC that used pulses of light just quadrillionths of a second long.

- Survey shows strong support for offshore wind power
01-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Delawareans are strongly in favor of offshore wind power as a future source of energy for the state, according to a survey conducted by University of Delaware researchers. When asked to select from a variety of sources to help the state increase its energy supply, more than 90 percent of the 949 Delaware residents responding to the survey supported an offshore wind option to generate electricity--even if wind power were to add between $1 and $30 per month to their electric bills.
