The evidential value and design of studies available so far are inadequate and do not allow conclusions regarding most patient-relevant therapy goals, such as the reduction in long-term complications or overall mortality. Due to the lack of data, the benefit of rapid-acting insulin analogues in children and adolescents is unclear.

On school days, teen boys who play video games appear to spend less time reading and teen girls who play video games appear to spend less time doing homework than those who do not play video games, according to a report in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Overall, video game players did not spend less time than non-video game players interacting with parents and friends.

Young adolescent girls' depression is tied to more stressful life events

In the first study to examine sex differences in depression that followed adolescents over a long period of time, researchers found that girls experience more negative life events and more stressors than boys. The study followed 562 8th and 10th grade students in the Chicago area and looked at depressive symptoms, alcohol use and the occurrence of life stressors. Girls reported more depressive symptoms and peer, family and romantic stressors lives than boys.

Adolescent arrest history influences risk of acquiring HIV

Adolescents with a history of arrest are at greater risk for HIV infection than adolescents with no arrest history, according to a new study published in the November issue of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Researchers from the Bradley Hasbro Children's Research Center and Brown Medical School attribute higher rates of substance abuse, sexual risk behaviors and mental-health issues to the increased risk of infection.

Researchers will present study results that indicate that subconjunctivally delivered insulin ameliorates degenerative and inflammatory responses in diabetic rat retinas at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology 2007 Annual Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The presentation will take place on Thursday, May 10 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Hall B/C of the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.

The University of Florida Health Science Center and Shands at UF are among 14 centers in the United States testing oral insulin to prevent or delay type 1 diabetes in people at risk for the disease. The center will work alongside affiliate sites and participating physicians in Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, a research group dedicated to the understanding, prevention and early treatment of type 1 diabetes.
