ESF helps Europe play lead role in new age of astronomical discovery

07-04-2007 · EurekAlert!

Astronomy is entering a new golden age of discovery led by breakthroughs in telescopes and instruments making them capable of observing distant events early in the life of the universe. There is now great optimism that one of the fundamental questions of cosmology, the origin of galaxies, will be resolved within the next decade or sooner.

  1. Scripps research team discovers a chemical pathway that causes mice to overeat and gain weight
    02-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute who are studying how body temperature and energy metabolism are regulated have discovered a pathway that appears to play a critical role in the onset of obesity. Further study of the pathway could lead to better understanding of the physiological foundation of obesity in humans and even the discovery of new treatments for the condition.

  2. Discovery of an HIV inhibitor in human blood points to new drug class
    04-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study has pinpointed a natural ingredient of human blood that effectively blocks HIV-1, the virus predominantly responsible for human AIDS, from infecting immune cells and multiplying. The virus blocker might play a role in the progression of HIV to full-blown AIDS and -- because it works in a different way than existing antiretroviral inhibitors -- could lead to the development of another class of drugs in the fight against the pandemic disease.

  3. Grandparents play role in driving Chinese expansion
    10-19-2006 · EurekAlert!
In China, when working-age adults migrate, leaving the elderly to care for their children, it occupies a culturally sanctioned role within the family and also helps to fuel the Chinese economy. A new USC study has found that grandparents living in three-generation households or with grandchildren in skipped-generation households in rural China have a more positive attitude than those living by themselves.

  4. Role identified for glaucoma gene and related signaling pathway
    02-14-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have found that a gene and a related signaling pathway play a role in the development of glaucoma, which is a common cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. The study, which revealed that over-expression of the gene, sFRP1, elevates pressure in the eye, could help improve glaucoma diagnosis and lead to the development of sight-saving treatments.

  5. Study helps explain how allergic reactions are triggered
    01-14-2008 · EurekAlert!
In demonstrating that a group of calcium ion channels play a crucial role in triggering inflammatory responses, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center have not only solved a longstanding molecular mystery regarding the onset of asthma and allergy symptoms, but have also provided a fundamental discovery regarding the functioning of mast cells.

  7. Molecular 'foreman' discovered for brain wiring
    11-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have identified a master regulatory molecule that is responsible for triggering the remodeling of neuronal connections that is critical for learning. Malfunctioning of the connection-remodeling machinery that they identified may also play a role in mental retardation, schizophrenia, and drug addiction. Thus, said the researchers, knowledge of the machinery could lead to insights into those disorders. Peter Penzes and colleagues published their findings in the Nov. 21, 2007, issue of the journal Neuron, published by Cell Press.

    08-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
In the timeless quest for healthier, younger looking skin, scientists made an important discovery with implications ranging from helping doctors develop more natural looking bioengineered skin grafts to helping cosmetics companies develop new products for the "perfect" sunless tan. The research study, published in The FASEB Journal's September print issue, shows for the first time how to manipulate skin tone and color using cells previously thought to play no significant role in this function.

    08-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Europe's flagship ground-based astronomical facility, the ESO VLT, has been equipped with a new 'eye' to study the Universe. Working in the near-infrared, the new instrument -- dubbed HAWK-I -- covers about 1/10th the area of the Full Moon in a single exposure. It is uniquely suited to the discovery and study of faint objects, such as distant galaxies or small stars and planets.
