Greenland's ancient forests shed light on stability of ice sheet
07-05-2007 · EurekAlert!Ice cores drilled from southern Greenland have revealed the first evidence of a surprisingly lush forest that existed in the region within the past million years. The findings from an international study published today in the journal Science suggest that the southern Greenland ice sheet may be much more stable against rising temperatures than previously thought.

- Radar reveals view of land beneath polar ice
12-11-2006 · EurekAlert!
In the first test of a new radar instrument, scientists have seen through more than a mile of Greenland ice to reveal an image of land that has been hidden for millions of years. Ohio State University scientists and their colleagues will use what they learn from the instrument, dubbed GISMO (for Global Ice Sheet Mapping Orbiter), to determine how global climate change will affect the ice.

02-01-2008 · EurekAlert!
DNA of the common black rat has shed light on the ancient spread of rats, people and diseases around the globe. Studying the mitochondrial DNA of 165 black rat specimens from 32 countries around the world, an international team of scientists has identified six distinct lineages in the black rat's family tree, each originating from a different part of Asia.

- Scientists observe drumlin beneath ice sheet
01-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists have discovered a warehouse-sized drumlin -- a mound of sediment and rock -- actively forming and growing under the ice sheet in Antarctica. Its discovery, and the rate at which it was formed, sheds new light on ice-sheet behavior. This could have implications for predicting how ice sheets contribute to sea-level rise. The results are published this week in the journal Geology.

12-11-2007 · EurekAlert!
The 2007 melt extent on the Greenland ice sheet broke the 2005 summer melt record by 10 percent, making it the largest ever recorded there since satellite measurements began in 1979, according to a University of Colorado at Boulder climate scientist.

01-15-2008 · EurekAlert!
A University of Colorado at Boulder study indicates meltwater periodically overwhelms the interior drainpipes of Alaska's Kennicott Glacier and causes it to lurch forward, similar to processes that may help explain the acceleration of glaciers observed recently on the Greenland ice sheet that are contributing to global sea rise.
