Satellite survey links tropical park fires with poverty and corruption

07-09-2007 · EurekAlert!

According to the first global assessment of forest fire control effectiveness in tropical parks, poverty and corruption correlate closely with lack of fire protection in tropical moist forests. A better understanding of the links between corruption, poverty and park management will help conservationists and policy makers create sophisticated strategies to conserve tropical ecosystems.

  1. Baltimore inner-city homes unsafe for young children, Hopkins study finds
    07-24-2007 · EurekAlert!
Infants and young children living in Baltimore's inner-city homes are at risk for serious perils, including fires, falls and poisoning, according to a small but revealing study from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. A survey of 32 urban homes found that many lacked functioning fire alarms, staircase gates and safe storage for medications, researchers report in the August issue of Pediatrics. Fires, falls and poisonings are the top causes of childhood home injuries in Baltimore.

  2. Soft drinks alone do not affect children's weight
    09-11-2007 · EurekAlert!
Soft drink consumption has increased in both the USA and the UK over the years and this has often been blamed for a rise in childhood body mass index. However, many of the review methodologies investigating the alleged links have been flawed. A recent scientific analysis of a nationally representative sample of children's diets and lifestyles from the Government's National Diet and Nutrition Survey found no link between the amount of soft drinks children consume and their body weight.

  3. Another world first for Artemis: a laser link with an aircraft
12-18-2006 · European Space Agency (ESA)
Artemis, the European Space Agency Advanced Relay and Technology Mission Satellite, successfully relayed optical laser links from an aircraft in early December. These airborne laser links, established over a distance of 40 000 km during two flights at altitudes of 6000 and 10 000 metres, represent a world first.

  4. Smaller storms drop larger overall rainfall in hurricane season
    12-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have found that when residents of the US southeastern states look skyward for rain to alleviate a long-term drought, they should be hoping for a tropical storm over a hurricane for more reasons than one. According to a new study using NASA satellite data, smaller tropical storms do more to alleviate droughts than hurricanes do over the course of a season by bringing greater cumulative rainfall.

  5. New study links Western wildfires to Atlantic Ocean surface temperatures
    12-26-2006 · EurekAlert!
Western U.S. wildfires are likely to increase in the coming decades, according to a new tree-ring study led by the University of Comahue in Argentina and involving the University of Colorado at Boulder that links episodic fire outbreaks in the past five centuries with periods of warming sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic.

  6. Emergency responses greatly increase risk to firefighters of dying on duty from heart disease
    03-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a new, large-scale study, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health examined the link between CHD deaths and firefighting and looked at specific job duties to see which might increase the risk of dying from a coronary event. The landmark study provides the strongest link to date between CHD and emergency firefighting duties. It found that putting out fires was associated with a risk about 10 to 100 times greater than the risk of dying from nonemergency duties.

Heraklion, Crete: An earthquake has just shaken the Greek island. Damage is widespread and all conventional, terrestrial communications have been destroyed. The rescue operations have only one means at their disposal that has not been affected by the quake - a satellite which, from its altitude of 36 000 kilometres, can immediately link the locations involved in the catastrophe with the appropriate authorities.

  8. Brazil demonstrating that reducing tropical deforestation is key win-win global warming solution
    05-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
Recent studies by Woods Hole Research Center scientists demonstrate that during years of severe drought, tropical rainforest fires can double emissions from tropical forests. Now, an international team of forest and climate researchers has found that halving deforestation rates by mid-century would account for 12 percent of total emissions reductions needed to keep concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere at safe levels. This work is profiled in a recent issue of Science.
