Quitting smoking -- a time in hospital can be a good time to start

A Cochrane Systematic Review has found that the chance of successfully quitting can be enhanced if patients receive smoking cessation counselling during their stay, and then have at least one month of supportive contact after going home.

Another disease can be added to the list of smoking-related disorders -- psoriasis. Researchers have found that smoking increases the risk of developing psoriasis, heavier smoking increases the risk further, and the risk decreases only slowly after quitting. Investigators from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Harvard School of Public Health, all in Boston, Mass., US, and Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Canada, have published the results in the November 2007 issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

Just in time for the start of the holiday eating season -- a new study finds that dieters who have the tendency to eat in response to external factors, such as at parties, have fewer problems with their weight loss than those who eat in response to emotions. Led by researchers at The Miriam Hospital's Weight Control & Diabetes Research Center, the study also found that emotional eating was associated with weight regain.

People treated with the drug minocycline within six to 24 hours after a stroke had significantly fewer disabilities, according to a study published in the Oct. 2, 2007, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Researchers say minocycline may be an alternative treatment for stroke because current treatments only work during the first few hours after the onset of symptoms, and many people don't get to the hospital in time to be treated.
