Wild weather forces farmers to adapt

07-27-2007 · EurekAlert!

The development of cropping systems resilient to extreme climatic conditions, is a major challenge to farmers. USDA researchers summarize their findings on the short-term effects of a variety of crop sequences, in dynamic cropping systems in the July-August 2007 issue of Agronomy Journal.

  1. Special chip provides better picture of salmon health
    10-16-2006 · EurekAlert!
How do you tell if a fish is fit and well? This is a question which has troubled farmers and biologists for years, but now scientists may have come up with the answer -- using DNA chips. By studying the genes of Atlantic salmon scientists from three UK universities are developing a DNA chip to monitor the health and performance of salmon, a tool which could both save the salmon industry thousands and also help conserve dwindling wild salmon populations.

  2. Pig study sheds new light on the colonisation of Europe by early farmers
    09-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
The earliest domesticated pigs in Europe, which many archaeologists believed to be descended from European wild boar, were actually introduced from the Middle East by Stone Age farmers, new research suggests.

  3. Study examines correlation between race and police force size
    10-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
Empirical studies have long shown that crime rate and budget alone do not account for the size of an area's police force. Police forces tend to be larger in areas where blacks comprise a larger percentage, and many sociologists have attributed this to racial attitudes, specifically the white population's perceptions of threat. A thought-provoking study is the first to empirically examine this premise.

  4. Shoulder ligament a linchpin in the evolution of flight
    12-17-2006 · EurekAlert!
Brown University and Harvard University scientists created a 3-D model of a gliding pigeon, put alligators on a treadmill, and examined rare Chinese fossils to better understand the evolution of flight. They learned how modern birds balance an array of forces, from the pull of muscles to the pull of gravity, at the shoulder joint. They discovered that this "force balance system" changed over time so that a single ligament acts as a linchpin in today's fliers. Results are published online in Nature.

  6. Pig study forces rethink of Pacific colonisation
    03-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
A survey of wild and domestic pigs, published in PNAS, has caused archaeologists to reconsider both the origins of the first Pacific colonists and the migration routes humans travelled to reach the remote Pacific.

  7. Scientists discover cost-effective ways to improve crop output in Uganda
    05-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of American and Ugandan researchers worked with local farmers to test low-cost soil management alternatives in eastern Uganda. While each alternative soil treatment increased crop output, findings suggest that the best treatment plan varies from farmer to farmer as it is dependent on other factors.

  8. CDF precision measurement of W-boson mass suggests a lighter Higgs particle
    01-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists at Fermilab announced the world's most precise measurement by a single experiment of the mass of the W-boson, the carrier of the weak nuclear force and a key parameter of the Standard Model of particles and forces. The new W-mass value leads to an estimate for the mass of the yet-undiscovered Higgs boson that is lighter than previously predicted, in principle making observation of this elusive particle more likely by experiments at the Tevatron particle collider at Fermilab.
