Satellite tracking reveals threats to Borneo pygmy elephants
08-08-2007 · EurekAlert!A new WWF study tracking pygmy elephants by satellite shows that the remaining herds of these endangered elephants, which live only on the island of Borneo, are under threat from forest fragmentation and loss of habitat. Borneo pygmy elephants depend for their survival on forests situated on flat, low lands and in river valleys, the study found. Unfortunately, it is also the type of terrain preferred for commercial plantations.

01-28-2008 · EurekAlert!
An examination of the connections between elephants and lizards appears this month in the journal Ecology, where a researcher reports that the elephants' eating habits have a strong influence on the lizards' habitat choices. The results demonstrate an important and little understood aspect of ecosystem engineering, and may help land managers working on wildlife refuges in Africa.

Using a state-of-the-art satellite imagery technique, researchers can more precisely predict volcanic activity, bringing them closer to understanding where eruptions may occur. A new study in Science this week examines Mauna Loa's volcanic activity. With this new technique, researchers can more precisely forecast locations of volcanic activity -- providing critical information to improve warning systems and hazard assessment of populated areas surrounding one of the world’s most naturally dangerous ecosystems, volcanoes.

- Dental crowns reveal the diet of a species:
12-14-2006 · EurekAlert!
According to recent research, the complexity of tooth surfaces reveals the diet of a species. Scientists at the University of Helsinki's Institute of Biotechnology and Department of Geology showed that the more complex the surface of an animal's teeth, the greater the share of vegetables in its diet. For instance, the teeth of carnivores and rodents differ in almost every aspect, but if a carnivore and a rodent eat similar food, their teeth are equally complex. The results were published in Nature.

- Scientists reveal structure of gateways to gene control
03-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
The first complete high-resolution map of structures that control how genes are packaged and regulated throughout an entire genome has been compiled by Penn State scientists. The research suggests how certain nucleosomes control whether a gene's function can be turned on. The study reveals an intimate relationship between the architecture of nucleosomes and the underlying DNA sequences they regulate, including a critical gateway that must be unlocked before a gene can be transcribed.

09-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
An international team of researchers has revealed the genetic secrets of one of the world's most debilitating human parasites, Brugia malayi, which the World Health Organization estimates has seriously incapacitated and disfigured more than 40 million people around the globe. The study reveals dozens of potential new targets for drugs or vaccines and should provide new opportunities for understanding, treating and preventing elephantiasis, the disfiguring disease caused by the Brugia malayi parasite.

- Study explores distinction between 'different' and 'uncool'
12-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Just as some products reveal our aspirations, there are other products that consumers avoid, lest we be associated with a particular group. An environmentalist would never buy an SUV. Baby boomers avoid products associated with being elderly. What's the difference between products we actively avoid and those that are simply "not us?" A new study reveals an important distinction -- and also highlights the mitigating effect of social pressure.
