The results of the HALT study, a federally funded study to examine whether black cohosh is an effective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats -- common symptoms of menopause -- found that black cohosh was no better than a dummy pill. Infection with Kaposi's sarcoma virus (KSHV) can cause 3 types of tumor, including primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). Although KSHV has been known to cause tumors for many years, there are no effective therapies for KSHV-induced tumors. In a new study it is shown that the small-molecule inhibitor Nutlin-3a has antitumor effects in a mouse xenograft model of PEL, indicating that it might provide a viable therapeutic option for the treatment of individuals with PEL.
