Shire plc announced positive results of four studies of the investigational medication guanfacine extended release (GXR, previously referred to as SPD503), a selective alpha-2A-adrenoceptor agonist. These data from two short-term and two long-term phase 3 studies, presented at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, demonstrated GXR significantly improved all core symptoms of ADHD in children aged 6 to 17 years. GXR is the first selective alpha-2A-adrenoceptor agonist tested in well-controlled studies as an ADHD treatment.

Northwestern University researchers report the drug etanercept -- FDA approved for adults but never before tested in children for psoriasis-- dramatically reduced psoriasis flare-ups.

This so-called "off-label" use of drugs was thought to be especially common in children, and the new research, the largest-ever U.S. pediatric study, confirms this.

High cholesterol which runs in families is known as familial hypercholesterolaemia. It affects about two in every 1000 people and causes very high levels of low density lipoprotein or "bad cholesterol" in the blood. It carries a high risk of death from coronary heart disease.

Researchers at the Columbus Children's Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio, found that an estimated 17,000 injuries occur annually -- three times more than previously reported.
