In a paper, to appear in the August 29 issue of the online, open-access journal PLoS ONE, Stanford scientists show that the standard practice of tracking only female life histories leads to mistaken conclusions about the forces that shape human evolution. The reason is that men's and women's age patterns of fertility differ in important ways.

   Study of 130 African-American men with HIV found that 38 percent didn't use condoms during oral sex, 25 percent during vaginal sex and 22 percent during anal sex, despite good knowledge about HIV and AIDS. Single men with fewer symptoms were most likely to engage in unsafe sex. This is a worrying finding, say the Philadelphia-based authors, as US figures for 2005 show that 44 percent of all new cases of HIV were in black males.

    Human rhinovirus (HRV), the leading cause of most common colds, struck two immunosuppressed lung transplant patients, leading to progressive respiratory failure, graft dysfunction, and death.
