- Hospitalized heart failure patients may benefit from oral tolvaptan
03-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
A diagnosis of worsening acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is characterized by the development of dyspnea (shortness of breath) associated with the rapid accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Patients who are hospitalized with ADFA need rapid and sustained fluid retention without risking renal dysfunction. Tolvaptan has been shown to achieve rapid and sustained results in this patient population, according to a study presented today at the American College of Cardiology’s 56th Annual Scientific Session.

Patients who experience abnormal heart rhythm are often treated with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). However, not all patients will benefit from the implant. According to a study presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 56th Annual Scientific Session, a new test called an abnormal T-Wave Alternans test may be able to identify heart failure patients with stage II and III nonischemic cardiomyopathy who are likely to benefit from the use of an ICD.

A potential new biomarker for heart failure may be more powerful than established measures in identifying patients at increased risk for death from several causes. In their report, an international research team describes finding that blood levels of a protein called ST2 both indicate the presence of heart failure among patient with shortness of breath and powerfully predict the risk that a patient will die during the following year.
