Galaxy 'hunting' made easy
09-14-2007 · EurekAlert!Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have discovered in a single pass about a dozen otherwise invisible galaxies halfway across the universe. The discovery, based on a technique that exploits a first-class instrument, represents a major breakthrough in the field of galaxy "hunting."

- Hubble shows 'baby' galaxy is not so young after all
10-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has found out the true nature of a dwarf galaxy that astronomers had for a long time identified as one of the youngest galaxies in the Universe. Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have made observations of the galaxy I Zwicky 18 which seem to indicate that it is in fact much older and much farther away than previously thought.

03-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
Images made with ESO's New Technology Telescope at La Silla by a team of German astronomers reveal a rich circular cluster of stars in the inner parts of our Galaxy. Located 30,000 light-years away, this previously unknown closely-packed group of about 100,000 stars is most likely a new globular cluster.

11-07-2006 · EurekAlert!
A large survey, made with ESO's VLT, has shed light on our Galaxy's ancestry. After determining the chemical composition of over 2000 stars in the four nearest dwarf galaxies to our own, astronomers have demonstrated fundamental differences in their make-up, casting doubt on the theory that these diminutive galaxies could ever have formed the building blocks of our Milky Way Galaxy.

- Home, Home On The Range: How Much Space Does An Animal Really Need?
10-05-2006 · ScienceDaily
Instead of wandering around aimlessly, most animals tend to stay in a certain area -- known as their home range. Understanding an animal's home range has been a central focus of ecological research since Darwin's time. But while explaining why different sized species need different amounts of space is relatively easy, a study from the October issue of the American Naturalist tackles a much more complex question: What determines differences in home range size among individuals of one species?

- Self-monitoring helps reduce high-risk behavior among HIV-positive people
07-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
There are many effective, albeit expensive, intervention programs aimed at encouraging HIV-positive people to practice less risky behavior. But new research has found that self-monitoring by these patients is not only an effective strategy but is inexpensive and easy to implement as well. By simply having patients answer a series of questions about their sexual behavior while waiting for regularly scheduled medical examinations, researchers found that people living with HIV took steps to change their behavior.
