Blood protein detects lung cancer, even at earliest stage
09-18-2007 · EurekAlert!Biopharmaceutical researchers have found a protein in blood they say is linked to all stages of lung cancer but which rarely shows up in the blood of people without the disease. Testing for this protein might help physicians decide whether smokers or others at high risk for lung cancer should be referred for lung imaging, say investigators, who presented their findings today in Atlanta, Ga., at the AACR's second International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics in Cancer Therapeutic Development.

- Cleveland Clinic leading clinical program to improve early-stage lung cancer detection
11-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Cleveland Clinic and Riverain Medical today announced the establishment of the first study in an ongoing program to determine whether chest X-ray CAD (computer-aided detection) can improve practical early detection of lung cancer. The program is designed to determine whether chest X-ray CAD can help identify hard to detect lung cancers at an early stage when they are most treatable, leading to improved patient survival rates.

08-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
Cancer of the liver is very difficult to detect, and it is a major cause of death in Asia and Africa, with rising incidence in Western countries. VIB researchers connected to UGent, in collaboration with research centers in Beijing and Shanghai, developed a test to detect liver cancer in early stage. A blood sample is the only requirement for the test. The test enables accurate detection of liver cancer in over 50 percent of the cases.

- Jefferson scientists find blood vessel-building protein halts blood vessels from forming in cancer
11-14-2006 · EurekAlert!
A piece of the protein cellular scaffolding involved in building blood vessels duringdevelopment might have the opposite effect in tumors. Scientists have found that the protein fragment endorepellin blocks both skin and lung cancer tumors from progressing in animal models by preventing their ability to recruit new blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis. The researchers believe the finding could lead to a new type of tumor inhibitor to prevent cancer from spreading.
