Patients who experience abnormal heart rhythm are often treated with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). However, not all patients will benefit from the implant. According to a study presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 56th Annual Scientific Session, a new test called an abnormal T-Wave Alternans test may be able to identify heart failure patients with stage II and III nonischemic cardiomyopathy who are likely to benefit from the use of an ICD.

For the first time, researchers have identified lung injury to nonsmokers that was long suspected, but not previously detectable with medical imaging tools. The researchers suggest that their findings may strengthen public health efforts to restrict secondhand smoke.

A new study from McMaster University in Hamilton sheds light on the relationship between women who smoke while pregnant -- or are exposed to secondhand smoke -- and an increased risk of SIDS to their babies.
