Teen girls report abusive boyfriends try to get them pregnant

In a new qualitative clinical study published in the September-October issue of the journal Ambulatory Pediatrics, pediatrician Elizabeth Miller and her research colleagues report that a quarter of the teenage girls interviewed for the study -- all of whom had histories of abusive relationships -- say their partners were actively trying to get them pregnant. The study, available online today, is the first in the general adolescent health literature to document the role of abusive partners in promoting teen pregnancy.

On school days, teen boys who play video games appear to spend less time reading and teen girls who play video games appear to spend less time doing homework than those who do not play video games, according to a report in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. For two consecutive years, researchers examined measures of cardiovascular fitness and self-esteem in sophomore girls attending Trenton Central High School and found students are making better health choices with an intervention program. Low Density Lipoprotein levels -- the unhealthy cholesterol -- also decreased significantly. WHF TEEN ESTEEM is a gender-specific approach to teen girls' health and wellness and is meant to be a replacement for traditional gymnastics and health classes.

Rapid growth, early maturity meant teen pregnancy for dinosaurs

Now that scientists have identified the fossil bones of three female dinosaurs, each a different species, it has become clear that dinosaurs exhibited rapid growth and early maturity, probably because they had a high early mortality rate. UC-Berkeley and Ohio University paleontologists report details of two of the three and argue that dinosaurs reached sexual maturity in their teens, more akin to mammals than to their reptile ancestors or their descendents, the birds.
