- Link between chronic kidney disease and oxygen-deprived tissue
12-18-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have discovered how low-oxygen conditions can worsen chronic kidney disease. The key player is a protein called hypoxia-inducible-factor that, as its name suggests, is active when the kidney does not get enough oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia.

- Surgical biopsy may reveal cancer in women with rare but benign breast condition
11-10-2006 · EurekAlert!
A study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis showed that in women whose initial breast biopsies revealed certain rare, yet benign breast conditions, more extensive follow-up surgical biopsies found cancer up to 25 percent of the time. Most of the cancers were invasive, meaning the tumors had penetrated normal breast tissue and would require treatment.

- New imaging technique identifies people-at-risk for Alzheimer's disease
12-20-2006 · EurekAlert!
UCLA researchers used innovative brain scan technology with a new imaging molecule, invented at UCLA, to show that abnormal brain protein deposits that define Alzheimer's disease can be detected in people with mild cognitive impairment, a condition affecting 15-20 million Americans that increases risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. The new imaging technique helped researchers track disease progression over a two-year period and may be helpful in detecting pre-Alzheimer's conditions.

- Growth factors given with chemotherapy associated with increased risk of blood diseases
02-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Women with breast cancer who receive compounds that stimulate white blood cell production to help their bodies better tolerate chemotherapy are at an increased risk of developing a type of leukemia or a condition called myelodysplastic syndrome, according to a new study in the February 7, Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The authors note that the absolute risk of the conditions is very small, but that risk should still be taken into consideration when making treatment decisions.

- Geriatric health conditions have major effect on half of all seniors
08-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
While much of the medical world focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, a new study from the University of Michigan Health System finds that half of all seniors have a geriatric condition that can affect their ability to engage in activities of daily living as much as diseases can. Yet these conditions often aren't recognized or treated because they don't fall into the category of a disease.

- Europe to tackle brain disorder research by linking industry, academia
11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Attempts to cure brain-related disorders have proved less successful than therapies for other major conditions such as heart cancer, even though just as many people suffer from them. About 600 million worldwide each year are afflicted by depression alone, more than any other condition except heart disease, and yet of those given existing drugs, only half recover.

- Massive dinosaur discovered in Antarctica sheds light on life, distribution of sauropodomorphs
12-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new genus and species of dinosaur from the Jurassic has been discovered in Antarctica. The massive plant-eating primitive sauropodomorph is called Glacialisaurus hammeri and lived about 190 million years ago. The fossils were painstakingly removed from the ice and rock using jackhammers, rock saws and chisels under extremely difficult conditions over two field seasons. The long-necked herbivorous sauropods were the largest animals to walk the earth. They include Diplodocus and Apatosaurus.
