Quantitative PET imaging finds early determination of effectiveness of cancer treatment
10-23-2007 · EurekAlert! With positron emission tomography imaging, seeing is believing: evaluating a patient's response to chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma typically involves visual interpretation of scans of cancer tumors. Researchers have found that measuring a quantitative index -- one that reflects the reduction of metabolic activity after chemotherapy first begins -- adds accurate information about patients' responses to first-line chemotherapy, according to a study in the October issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

- Jefferson scientists see breast cancer gene activity from outside the body
11-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at Jefferson Medical College and Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia have used PET imaging to see hyperactive cancer genes inside breast tumors in laboratory animals, marking the first time such gene activity has been observed from outside the body. This technology might someday help physicians to detect and classify cancer, enabling them to find cancerous breast tumors as early as possible, and determine the appropriate treatment.

12-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
MRI, which is not routinely administered to women who plan to undergo a lumpectomy, can find additional cancerous areas in the breast that previously evaded detection, discover cancer in the opposite breast that standard imaging tests such as mammography and ultrasound missed, or determine a tumor is actually larger than expected.
