Patients with symptomatic moderate asthma who were treated with anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha, an anti-inflammatory monoclonal antibody, experienced significantly fewer disease exacerbations than individuals taking a placebo. This research appears in the first issue for October 2006 of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society.

Young people with asthma are about twice as likely to suffer from depressive and anxiety disorders than are children without asthma, according to a study by a research team in Seattle. Previous research had suggested a possible link in young people between asthma and some mental health problems, but this study is the first showing such a strong connection. The findings appear in the November issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Much of the research surrounding childhood asthma has sought new approaches to managing the disease. However, little was done to address other conditions that often appear along with asthma including depression and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Research completed at the University of Virginia Children's Hospital asserts that until these extra conditions or "co-morbidities" are addressed, asthma education programs will not be able to help young patients to the fullest.

Final results of the first randomized and controlled clinical study of bronchial thermoplasty, the Asthma Intervention Research Trial, were reported today at the annual scientific assembly of the American Thoracic Society. This follows the March publication of the AIR Trial results in the New England Journal of Medicine. These results include patients treated with the outpatient procedure demonstrated a 50 percent decrease in asthma attacks and a 45 percent reduction in rescue medication use.
