ACP issues comprehensive guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of stable COPD
10-31-2007 · EurekAlert!ACP released a clinical practice guideline on diagnosing and treating stable COPD, a progressive lung disease involving the airways and lung tissue, resulting in a gradual loss of lung function, typically as a result of smoking. COPD affects more than 5 percent of the adult population in the US and is the fourth leading cause of death. The term COPD includes both emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

A summary of evidence on the diagnosis, treatment of low-back prompts the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians to issue a new treatment guideline. The guideline is based on research conducted at the Oregon Evidence-Based Practice Center, Oregon Health & Science University. Among the recommendations: clinicians should rely less on X-rays and expensive diagnostic imaging and reports and more on therapies supported by the evidence, including some medications and some alternative therapies.

Mayo Clinic researchers have found that first-degree relatives (i.e., parents, siblings, children) of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis are more likely to have the biomarker of the disease in their blood. Armed with this new information, physicians could screen and assess first-degree relatives of PBC patients with a simple blood test, enabling them to diagnose and treat more patients before the disease causes irreversible liver damage. These findings were published in this month's issue of Hepatology.
