Large dose dexamethasone plays important roles in severe acute pancreatitis
11-02-2007 · EurekAlert! The sound therapeutic effects of large dose dexamethasone on severe acute pancreatitis have been demonstrated, but the mechanism of large dose dexamethasone treatment in SAP has not been explored. A research group in Hangzhou, China, demonstrated that potential mechanisms were related to the inflammatory mediators inhibition and pancreatic acinar cell apoptosis, based on the application of the tissue microarray technique.

- Glucocorticoid plays key role in skin abnormalities induced by psychological stress
12-01-2006 · EurekAlert!
A new study shows how psychological stress induces abnormalities in skin structure and function that could initiate or worsen skin disorders such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The study provides a link for understanding the roles psychological stress and glucocorticoid, a type of steroid, play in skin disorders and shows that blocking glucocorticoid can prevent skin abnormalities induced by psychological stress.

06-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Large, seemingly useless pieces of RNA -- a molecule originally considered only a lowly messenger for DNA -- play an important role in letting cells know where they are in the body and what they are supposed to become, researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine have discovered.

- The most important candidate genes for pancreatic stone formation
11-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
Chronic pancreatitis, an inflammatory condition of the pancreas, is usually associated with parenchymal calcification and multiple stones in the pancreatic duct. Lithostathine, a major proteic component of pancreatic stones, is thought to play an important role in stone formation. A research group from India has investigated if mutations in the gene encoding lithostathine (reg1) are responsible for stone formation, using tropical calcific pancreatitis as their model of chronic pancreatitis.

- Spirituality plays role in breast cancer information processing for African-American women
01-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 178,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die as a result of breast cancer in 2007. One way to battle these numbers is through increased information sharing and use of early detection methods. A new study from the University of Missouri-Columbia has found that spirituality might play an important role in achieving this, particularly for African-American women.

- Research team finds link between zinc and macular degeneration
08-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of scientists, including three researchers at George Mason University, found that the mineral zinc could play a role in the development of macular degeneration. In studying eye tissue samples, the researches found that deposits, that are hallmarks of age-related macular degeneration, contain large amounts of zinc. This finding, published in the journal Experimental Eye Research, might be particularly important because zinc supplements are widely given to patients to help boost weak immune systems.

- Zebrafish: It's not your parents' lab rat
07-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
Developmental biologists at Rice University have found that a gene called LMO4, which is known to play roles in both cell reproduction and in breast cancer, also plays a role in neurological development. By both knocking out and overexpressing the gene in zebrafish, the scientists determined that LMO4 independently regulates two other genes that are involved with the development of the forebrain and eyes. The results are slated to appear in the journal Developmental Biology.
