Second radio link-up between Nespoli and Italian students

The second amateur radio link-up between ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli and Italian students took place yesterday morning at around 8:33 CET (07:33 UT). This link-up continues the Amateur Radio on the ISS (ARISS) educational activity, which is part of the joint ESA-ASI programme of education activities for the Esperia mission.

When Elizabeth Thomas, a graduate student at the University at Buffalo, travels this month to Baffin Island in the northeast Canadian Arctic, she not only will be sampling sediments from the bottom of frozen lakes, she also will be educating a native Inuit class about global warming, taking local schoolchildren on a sediment-coring field trip and may participate in a call-in radio show with translators that will be broadcast in Inuktitut, the local language.

Home-Schooled Student Wins Brookhaven Lab's Model Bridge Contest

Benjamin Coburn, a home-schooled student from Center Moriches, won first place in Brookhaven National Lab's 2007 Model Bridge Contest. Coburn won second place in the contest last year, and he also placed first in 2005. Over 150 students from 12 Suffolk County high schools entered their model basswood bridges in the contest with the goal of making the lightest bridge that held the most weight.
