ALTRAN unveils its energy efficiency concepts solutions

11-13-2006 · EurekAlert!

ALTRAN, the European leader in innovation and high technology consulting, unveiled at the EcoBuilding Performance Forum on the 8-9 of November in Paris, three new eco-innovative concepts, to enable the best use of energy in the building and urban environment sectors. The "eco-innovation" is one of the pillars of the environment policy recently adopted by the EU, emphasizing that a "green" product is not enough, but that the product's life cycle must be energy efficient.

  1. Solar energy conversion offers a solution to help mitigate global warming
    03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Solar energy has the power to reduce greenhouse gases and provide increased energy efficiency, says a scientist at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, in a report (view it online) published in the March issue of Physics Today. Last month, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations released a report confirming global warming is upon us and attributing the growing threat to the man-made burning of fossil fuels.

  2. Study identifies energy efficiency as reason for evolution of upright walking
    07-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study provides support for the hypothesis that walking on two legs, or bipedalism, evolved because it used less energy than quadrupedal knucklewalking.

  3. Bacteria join ranks of lazy cheaters
    09-24-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study has discovered that one type of bacteria has mutants that shut down certain communication systems so they don't have to share the communal burden of obtaining nutrients. This "cheating" mechanism forces other bacteria do all the work while the lazy bacteria save their energy, grow faster and out-compete other cells. The findings could suggest new concepts for antibiotic development.

  5. To catch an intermediate
    12-21-2006 · EurekAlert!
A new technique for capturing the short-lived but critical "intermediate" compounds that help carry chemical reactions which take place in aqueous solution from their starting point to the final product has been developed by researchers with the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). This technique basically entails temporarily trapping the elusive transients inside molecular pyramids.

    01-29-2008 · EurekAlert!
German legislature has expanded the responsibilities of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care with the latest Health Care Reform. So far, the assessment of drugs has been limited to their clinical benefit. In future, the Institute is also to consider the costs of therapies and place these costs in relation to the benefits determined beforehand. IQWiG has recently presented a methods proposal that will be discussed broadly with the public in the coming months.

  7. Brookhaven lab scientists stabilize platinum electrocatalysts for use in fuel cells
    01-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Platinum is the most efficient electrocatalyst for accelerating chemical reactions in fuel cells for electric vehicles. In reactions during the stop-and-go driving of an electric car, however, the platinum dissolves, which reduces its efficiency as a catalyst. This is a major impediment for vehicle-application of fuel cells. Now, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have overcome this problem.

    07-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Northwestern University researchers have made strides in laser design, material growth and laser fabrication that have greatly increased the output power and wall-plug efficiency of quantum cascade lasers. They have demonstrated individual lasers, 300 of which can easily fit on a penny, emitting at wavelengths of 4.5 microns, capable of producing over 700 milliwatts of continuous output power at room temperature and more than one watt of output power at lower temperatures.
