Lungs' pressure needn't threaten heart transplant survival

11-06-2007 · EurekAlert!

Heart surgeons at Johns Hopkins say people who need heart transplants can largely avoid transplant failure due to elevated blood pressure in their lungs with the help of proper drug treatment.

    04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new immunosuppression regimen for heart transplant patients can improve kidney function and prevent transplant coronary artery disease, according to two new Mayo Clinic studies. Mayo researchers will report their findings on April 26 at the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation Annual Meeting and Scientific Session in San Francisco.

  3. Longer treatment benefits sleep apnea patients
    06-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Adults with obstructive sleep apnea benefit significantly from longer nightly use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a device to improve breathing during sleep, according to a new study supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health. This is the first study to identify the nightly duration of CPAP use needed to gain maximum benefit for daytime alertness and functioning.

Researchers from the long-standing Framingham Heart Study (FHS), a program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, report that people whose parents live longer were more likely to avoid developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease in middle age than their peers whose parents died younger.

  5. Increasing survival of organ transplant patients by reducing time interval for transported organs
    04-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Preservation of an organ intended for transplant during transport from donor to recipient is of primary concern in ensuring a successful transplant. Research presented at the ISHLT 27th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions today explores two diverging systems for pump preservation -- the Organ Care System and the cold preservation method, and how they each effect survival for heart transplant patients.

  6. Gene test shown to measure heart function after transplant
    03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
New Columbia University Medical Center research suggests a genomic test may provide detailed information on how well a transplanted heart is performing. The gene expression profiling test is currently used to detect the absence of heart transplant rejection instead of routine invasive heart muscle biopsies, but has now been shown to correlate with oxygen saturation levels, the pressure in the heart before pumping, and the electrical properties of the transplanted heart.

    03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers today reported that an investigational anti-hypertensive therapy may perform better in controlling blood pressure than standard treatments for patients undergoing heart surgery, during a presentation at the American College of Cardiology’s 56th Annual Scientific Session. Another study found that measuring a certain peptide can help evaluate dyspnea (shortness of breath) as heart- or lung-related in the general population.

  9. Transplanting organs from animals to humans -- what are the barriers?
    03-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Given the huge shortage of donor organs, researchers have been trying to find ways to transplant animal organs across different species (known as "xenotransplantation"), with the eventual aim of transplanting animal organs into humans. The major stumbling block, says Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin (US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute) in a paper in PLoS Medicine, is that the immune system in the animal receiving the organ tends to reject the transplant.

  10. Type of stem cell found to reside in transplanted lungs
    03-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study involving a type of stem cells from the lungs of transplant patients demonstrates for the first time that these progenitor cells reside in adult organs and are not derived from bone marrow, which leads to the possibility that the cells may be able to help with the rejection of donated organs and with various kinds of lung disease.
