Engineered weathering process could mitigate global warming
11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!Researchers at Harvard University and Pennsylvania State University have invented a technology, inspired by nature, to reduce the accumulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide caused by human emissions. By electrochemically removing hydrochloric acid from the ocean and then neutralizing the acid by reaction with silicate rocks, the researchers say they can accelerate natural chemical weathering, permanently transferring CO2 from the atmosphere to the ocean.

- Miniature lab ice spikes may hold clues to warming impacts on glaciers
03-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
Tiny lab versions of 12-foot tall snow spikes that form naturally on some high mountain glaciers may someday help scientists mitigate the effects of global warming in the Andes, according to a University of Colorado at Boulder professor.

- Solar energy conversion offers a solution to help mitigate global warming
03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Solar energy has the power to reduce greenhouse gases and provide increased energy efficiency, says a scientist at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, in a report (view it online) published in the March issue of Physics Today. Last month, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations released a report confirming global warming is upon us and attributing the growing threat to the man-made burning of fossil fuels.

- MIT: Nanoengineered concrete could cut CO2 emissions
01-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
While government leaders argue about the practicality of reducing world emissions of carbon dioxide, researchers are seeking ways to make it happen. One group of engineers at MIT is focusing its work on the nanostructure of concrete, the world's most widely used material. The production of cement, the primary component of concrete, accounts for 5 to 10 percent of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions; the process is an important contributor to global warming.

- U of Minnesota study: Destroying native ecosystems for biofuel crops worsens global warming
02-07-2008 · EurekAlert!
Turning native ecosystems into "farms" for biofuel crops causes major carbon emissions that worsen the global warming that biofuels are meant to mitigate, according to a new study by the University of Minnesota and the Nature Conservancy.

- Global temperature -- politics or science?
03-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
The entire debate about global warming is a mirage. The concept of "global temperature" is thermodynamically as well as mathematically an impossibility, says professor at The Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Bjarne Andresen who has analyzed this hot topic in collaboration with professors Christopher Essex from University of Western Ontario and Ross McKitrick from University of Guelph, both Ontario, Canada.

- Himalayan glacier melting observed from space
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
The Himalayan glaciers are melting under the effect of global warming. However, the extent of this melting remains difficult to assess from ground surveys owing to the great number of glaciers, the difficulty of access and the vastness of the mountain chain. IRD and CNRS scientists from the research units Great Ice and Legos have overcome these difficulties by using satellite imagery. This is the first step of a much more extensive project: evaluation and surveillance of the whole system of Himalayan glaciers .

- Biodiesel won't drive down global warming
04-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
EU legislation to promote the uptake of biodiesel could increase rather than decrease greenhouse gas emissions. A study reported in C&I revealed that while petroleum diesel emits 85 percent of its greenhouse gases at the final stage, in the engine, two-thirds of emissions produced by rapeseed derived biodiesel occur during farming -- cropland emits nitrous oxide, which is 200-300 times as potent a greenhouse gas as CO2.

- Death rates will rise because of global warming
07-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
Global warming will cause more deaths in summer because of higher temperatures but these will not be offset by fewer deaths in milder winters finds an analysis published online ahead of print in Occupational and Environment Medicine. The Harvard researchers analysed city-specific weather data related to the deaths of more than 6.5 million people in 50 US cities between 1989 and 2000.
