Half of patients with active early rheumatoid arthritis achieved clinical remission
11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!Amgen and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth, today announced that data from a multicenter, randomized, double-blind trial of ENBREL plus methotrexate showed that 50 percent of patients with active early rheumatoid arthritis achieved clinical remission at one year.

Nearly half -- 43.9 percent -- of rheumatoid arthritis patients receiving tocilizumab 8mg/kg, in addition to ongoing methotrexate therapy experienced a 50 percent improvement in symptoms at 24 weeks and more than one fifth achieved a 70 percent symptom improvement, according to results of a European study presented today at EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain. This study is the first phase III trial of tocilizumab.

The largest study to examine the effect of depression on HIV treatment appears in the online edition of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. The study by Kaiser Permanente and Group Health found depression significantly worsens a patient's adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy and clinical measures but that effective antidepressant medication reverses this outcome. The study looked at 3,359 HIV-infected patients to measure the effects of depression -- with and without SSRIs.

Patients who responded and those who were in remission at one year had lower mean number of hospitalizations vs. non-responders through one year of treatment.
