Sensor networks protect containers, navigate robots
11-13-2006 · EurekAlert!Agent 007 is a mighty versatile fellow, but he would have to take backseat to agents being trained at Washington University in St. Louis. Researchers here are using wireless sensor networks that employ software agents that have been able to navigate a robot through a simulated fire and spot said fire by seeking out heat. Once the agent locates the fire, it clones itself creating a ring of software around the fire.

Agent 007 is a mighty versatile fellow, but he would have to take backseat to agents being trained at Washington University in St. Louis. Computer scientist engineers here are using wireless sensor networks that employ software agents that so far have been able to navigate a robot safely through a simulated fire and spot a simulated fire by seeking out heat. Once the agent locates the fire, it clones itself -- try that, James Bond.

- Pervasive environmental sensing a possibility
01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers from MIT and two Singaporean universities have launched a bold new international research program called CENSAM. The program will develop pervasive environmental sensor networks to collect data on parameters such as air and water quality from many sources, and use this data to provide accurate, real-time monitoring, modeling and control of the environment.

- Robots that know when they've hit you
11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Roboticist Sami Haddadin lets his robot regularly hit him in the face. He is part of a team of researchers in Germany aiming to turn industrial robots into smart machines that can work alongside humans. They are programming the first industrial robot that can sense when it has hit someone and can stop movement to prevent further harm.

- Brain networks strengthened by closing ion channels
04-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Yale School of Medicine and University of Crete School of Medicine researchers report in Cell April 20 the first evidence of a molecular mechanism that dynamically alters the strength of higher brain network connections involved in working memory. This discovery may help the development of drug therapies for the cognitive deficits of normal aging, and for cognitive changes in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

- Nanowire generates power by harvesting energy from the environment
09-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
As the sizes of sensor networks and mobile devices shrink toward the microscale, and even nanoscale, there is a growing need for suitable power sources. Because even the tiniest battery is too big to be used in nanoscale devices, scientists are exploring nanosize systems that can salvage energy from the environment. Researchers at the University of Illinois have now shown that a single nanowire can produce power by harvesting mechanical energy.
