Changing environment organizes genetic structure
11-13-2007 · EurekAlert! What is the fundamental creative force behind life on Earth? It's a question that has vexed mankind for millennia, and thanks to theory and almost a year's worth of number-crunching on a supercomputer, Rice University physicist and bioengineer Michael Deem thinks he has the answer: a changing environment may organize the structure of genetic information itself. The research is available online and slated to appear next month in Physical Review Letters.

- A changing climate for protected areas
04-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
On April 6, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will release a report on how climate change will accelerate extinctions of species. New research in the journal Frontiers in Environment and Ecology concludes that protected areas are necessary for preventing the loss of species due to climate change. It is the first research on the relevancy of protected areas -- a mainstay of conservation efforts -- in adapting to climate change.

Signs of a warming climate are already being felt in the icy reaches of the Arctic. The consequences of diminishing sea-ice are far-reaching - affecting the peoples and wildlife reliant on this fragile ecosystem, global climate and even international shipping routes. EuroNews looks at how ESA satellites are an invaluable aid to monitoring this changing environment.

- Environment and exercise may affect research results, UA study shows
02-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
In the study, Knockout Mice: Is it Just Genetics? Effects of Enriched Housing on Fibulin-4+/- Mice, lead researcher Ann Baldwin, PhD, suggests that environmental factors may play a large part in research findings that investigators assume are due simply to genetic differences. Further, the study research indicates that appropriate environments may counteract the effects of some genetic deficiencies.

- Rutgers: GM/GMO/Biotech crop containment strategy
06-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Rutgers plant geneticists may have solved one of the fundamental problems in genetically engineered crop agriculture: genes leaking into the environment. In a recent PNAS paper Pal Maliga and Zora Svab breathed new life into a more secure means of introducing genetic material into a plant -- through its plastids. Their new study found plastids in pollen 100- to 1000-times less frequently than had been cited in the literature for more than 20 years.

04-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
How can humans adapt to climate change without adding even more stress to the environment? Scientists are now looking at ways to integrate the human dimension of climate change -- the choices we need to make to adapt to a changing global climate -- with the sophisticated climate prediction models used for the IPCC Assessment Reports. The goal: To evaluate the best ways forward.
