First-ever 'State of the Carbon Cycle Report' finds troubling imbalance
11-14-2007 · EurekAlert! The first "State of the Carbon Cycle Report" for North America, released online this week by the US Climate Change Science Program, finds the continent's carbon budget increasingly overwhelmed by human-caused emissions. North American sources release nearly 2 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere each year, mostly as carbon dioxide. Carbon "sinks" such as growing forests may remove up to half this amount, but these current sinks may turn into new sources as climate changes.

- Rise in atmospheric CO2 accelerates as economy grows, natural carbon sinks weaken
10-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
Human activities are releasing carbon dioxide faster than ever, while the natural processes that normally slow its buildup in the atmosphere appear to be weakening. These conclusions are drawn in a new study in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Oct. 22-26. The report states that "together, these effects characterize a carbon cycle that is generating stronger-than-expected climate forcing sooner than expected."

- UCR chemists identify organic molecules that mimic metals
04-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
Chemists at UC Riverside report that a class of carbenes -- molecules that have unusual, highly reactive carbon atoms -- can mimic, to some extent, the behavior of metals. The organic molecules could be used to develop carbon-based systems for storing hydrogen, and transform ammonia into amino compounds used to make pharmaceuticals and bulk industrial materials.

Researchers have discovered a five-fold increase in newer antiepileptic drugs given to children, despite the fact that their long-term safety has not been established. They've now called for urgent research into the top three. This comes hard on the heels of a report by the European Medicines Agency, which highlighted the need for further research into 21 antiepileptic drugs for children but didn't state which ones should be prioritised.
