Environment plays key role in children's readiness for school
11-15-2007 · EurekAlert!Researchers conducting one of the first studies to consider both environmental and genetic influences on school readiness found that environment is the most important factor in individual differences in children's readiness for school. The study involved 420 pairs of 5-year old twins whose achievement was rated by teachers after two years. The findings provide further incentive for continued interventions that address school readiness in at-risk children.

Young children's "self regulation" abilities, such as shifting and focusing attention, have been found to account for greater variation in early academic success than measures of intelligence. This study examined how the development of self-regulation is associated with emerging math and literacy ability in kindergarten. One particular aspect of self-regulation was particularly associated with early ability in math. Some children may be at risk of early school failure due to slower development of self-regulation abilities.

Researchers looked at data on 2000 low-income families to compare the development of children living with only their mothers with children living with biological fathers, in blended families, and in multigenerational families. Findings indicated that children's performance on developmental assessments changed little after their mothers married. The research suggests that although living arrangements might be used to identify at-risk children, interventions targeting living arrangements may not be effective for improving well-being in low-income children.
