New European loess map

A new map showing the distribution of loess sediments in Europe has been published for the first time in 75 years, in digital format. With this map, Dagmar Haase, a geographer at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, has completed the work of various researchers who had begun as far back as the 1970s and 80s to revise the last comprehensive inventory produced in 1932.

    Visitors to Supercomputing '06 in Tampa, Fla., this week will be the first to see a new interactive map that shows nine of the world's largest computing grids. The map, developed by researchers from GridPP in the UK and the European particle physics laboratory, CERN, in Geneva, uses Google Earth to pinpoint grid sites on six continents, showing more than 300 sites overall like the medieval "mappa mundi."

    Blocking a central signal molecule, researchers from the Mouse Biology Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Monterotondo, Italy, have found a way to protect muscle from degenerating after injury and to improve muscle healing in mice. The study appears in the current issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and suggests molecules with potential to speed up the regeneration of damaged muscle as promising drug targets for new therapies against muscle wasting.
