Woods Hole Research Center debuts new image mosaic that will strengthen global forest monitoring

11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!

Much of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Bali will focus on monitoring tropical deforestation and the critical role of remote sensing systems in REDD mechanism development. Using data acquired by the Japanese Advanced Land Observing Satellite, WHRC scientists have completed the first-of-its-kind image mosaic for part of the Amazon. Images acquired globally over narrow timeframes provide for "snapshots" of deforestation, giving leverage to monitoring programs that hinge on timely, accurate forest observations.

  1. Brazil demonstrating that reducing tropical deforestation is key win-win global warming solution
    05-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
Recent studies by Woods Hole Research Center scientists demonstrate that during years of severe drought, tropical rainforest fires can double emissions from tropical forests. Now, an international team of forest and climate researchers has found that halving deforestation rates by mid-century would account for 12 percent of total emissions reductions needed to keep concentrations of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere at safe levels. This work is profiled in a recent issue of Science.

  2. Seeing the trees for the forest: WHRC scientists creating national biomass and carbon dataset
    04-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
After completing a two-year pilot phase, Woods Hole Research Center scientists are expanding the scope of the "National Biomass and Carbon Dataset" for the year 2000. NBCD2000 will be an invaluable baseline data set for the assessment of carbon stock in US forest vegetation, improving current methods of determining carbon flux between vegetation and the atmosphere. Work on the remaining mapping zones will be completed at a rate of roughly one every seven working days.

  3. Understanding the global carbon budget -- Woods Hole Research Center expert provides insights
    05-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
As climate change becomes a more central issue in local, national, and international discussions, understanding the global carbon budget, and how it influences global warming, will become increasingly crucial. One of the world's preeminent carbon experts, Dr. R. A. Houghton, has authored a synthesis paper on the topic, summarizing the global carbon budget and why it is important. The work is featured in the current issue of the Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Science.

  4. WHRC releases 4 key reports
    12-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
As UNFCCC negotiations move towards powerful new mechanisms for compensating tropical countries for their reductions of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, important questions remain: How much will REDD cost? Will it benefit forest people? Can forests in chronically cloud-covered countries be accurately monitored? These topics are addressed in four new studies released today by the Woods Hole Research Center in anticipation of the 13th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC.

  5. Woods Hole Research Center scientists study impacts of industrial logging in Central Africa
    06-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
Though the dense humid forests of Central Africa have been regarded as among the most pristine on Earth, the expansion of industrial logging and the accompanying proliferation of road density are threatening the future of this important ecosystem. Woods Hole Research Center scientists are using satellite imagery taken from 1976 to 2003 to study the development of industrial logging and road density in Central Africa. The work is profiled in the current issue of Science.

  6. Scientists "See" New Ocean Floor Just Before and After It Is Created
11-23-2006 · Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
A multidisciplinary research team from six institutions has for the first time successfully anticipated and then chronicled a seafloor eruption along the global mid-ocean ridge, the most active volcanic system on Earth. The event along the East Pacific Rise has provided researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) with a rare opportunity to observe what happens in the immediate aftermath of an eruption.

    05-14-2007 · EurekAlert!
Woods Hole Research Center scientists have taken a novel approach to studying biological diversity by making use of laser remote sensing (lidar). WHRC scientists examined the relationships between bird species richness and habitat metrics derived from lidar data acquired by aircraft. They then explored the efficacy of predicting bird richness and abundance based on these metrics. The first phase of this research focuses on results from study sites in the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in Maryland.
