sLRP1-alpha provides relief from neuropathic pain
12-03-2007 · EurekAlert!Injury to peripheral nerves causes neuropathic pain. Normal pain relief therapies do not effectively provide relief from neuropathic pain. Further understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain is therefore essential to facilitate the development of new drugs and new research in rodents has provided evidence that a fragment of the protein LRP1 (sLRP1-alpha) attenuates neuropathic pain.

- Protein found that may provide relief from neuropathic pain
12-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Research in rodents by scientists from the UC-San Diego School of Medicine has provided evidence that a protein called LRP1 may help to ease neuropathic pain by blocking the response of glial cells that support and protect sensory neurons in the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathic pain is caused by injury to the peripheral nerves in diseases such as HIV/AIDS, shingles, and cancer or in repetitive motion disorders and trauma, and does not respond well to conventional pain-relieving drugs.

- Methadone and systematic follow-up: the best solution for managing chronic pain
09-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Approximately 30 percent of Canadians suffer daily from chronic pain. Patients may be affected differently depending on the intensity, but all chronic pain is debilitating and difficult to treat. A study carried out by Louise Lamb, a clinician nurse at the Pain Center of the Montreal University Health Center, and Dr. Yoram Shir, the director of the center, shows that methadone in combination with innovative and high-quality case management can provide relief for many patients.

- New guideline: Epidural steroid injections limited in treating back pain
03-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
A guideline developed by the American Academy of Neurology finds epidural steroid injections play a limited role in providing short-term pain relief for lower back pain that radiates down a leg, and do not provide long-term pain relief. The guideline is published in the March 6, 2007, issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

- Steroid Injections Do Not Provide Long-term Relief From Tennis Elbow, Study Says
10-07-2006 · ScienceDaily
Physiotherapy or a "wait and see" approach are both more effective in tackling tennis elbow than corticosteroid injections, a British Medical Journal study reveals. Researchers in Australia tested different treatments on three separate groups of patients with tennis elbow. One group of participants were allocated the "wait and see" approach -- they were reassured that the condition would eventually settle down and encouraged to wait. They were also given specific instructions on modifying their daily activities so to avoid aggravating their pain.

- The chemical peroxynitrite tolerates pain
11-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
The repeated use of opiates such as morphine to relieve chronic pain results in individuals having to take higher and higher doses to achieve equivalent pain relief. A new study has identified a role for the chemical peroxynitrite in this process in mice, leading to the suggestion that targeting ONOO' might provide an adjunct therapy for individuals using opiates to relieve chronic pain.

- New clinical trial results show how personalized medicine will alter treatment of genetic disorders
12-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
In the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, Eric Hoffman, PhD, posits that the results of a clinical trial involving a new treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy provides a proof-of-principle for personalized molecular medicine. He writes that advances allowing for systemic delivery of such drugs and provide proof of no long term toxicity for recipients are necessary but will likely come in short order. Moving forward, FDA regulations will prove critical for appropriate labeling and marketing of such personalized treatments.
