Astronomers find puzzling dwarf star with complex magnetic fields

Typically, little M-dwarf stars -- the most common type of star in the galaxy -- are cold, quiet, and dim. Now a team of astronomers led by Edo Berger, a Carnegie-Princeton postdoctoral fellow, found one M-dwarf that doesn't conform. It has an unusually active and complex magnetic field, stronger than our own Sun's, and a huge hot spot that covers half of its surface.

The magnetometer relies on the fact that the spins of atoms in the BEC precess in a magnetic field at a rate proportional to the field strength. Highly sensitive at low frequencies, the magnetometer may prove better than SQUIDs at measuring brain waves.

On Oct. 20, 2004, Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki saw the star let loose an outburst so bright that it was initially mistaken for a supernova. The star survived, but for only two years.     An international team of astronomers might have discovered the missing link in the evolution of the so-called magnetic cataclysmic variable stars. They determined the spin and orbital periods of the binary star Paloma. They found that the Paloma system has a weird way of rotating that fills the gap between two classes of magnetic cataclysmic stars. Their results will soon be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics.
