Climate's remote control on hurricanes
12-12-2007 · EurekAlert!Natural climate variations, which tend to involve localized changes in sea surface temperature, may have a larger effect on hurricane activity than the more uniform patterns of global warming, a report in this week's Nature suggests.

- Research finds evidence tropical cyclones have climate-control role
05-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
Purdue University researchers have found evidence that tropical cyclones and hurricanes play an important role in the ocean circulation patterns that transport heat and maintain the climate of North America and Europe. These findings suggest that there is an additional factor to be included in climate models that may change predictions of future climate scenarios.

- Environmental exodus
11-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
Climate change is likely to intensify droughts, storms and floods, which will undoubtedly lead to environmental migrations and potential conflicts in the areas migrated to. In the aftermath of environmental disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the US, Rafael Reuveny from Indiana University in the US looks at the role of environmental degradation on population migration, or "ecomigration," His study has just been published online in Springer's journal Human Ecology.

- Imaging experts perform cardiac scans by remote control
10-24-2006 · EurekAlert!
UCLA radiologists and Siemens Medical Solutions have developed remote-control software that enables an off-site imaging expert to operate a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine via the Internet. Reported in the November issue of Radiology, the study found that the quality of the remote scans were superior to onsite scans by a less experienced technologist, suggesting options for helping facilities or regions with limited medical staff and expertise.

- Graduate students study links between African and US weather systems
12-08-2006 · EurekAlert!
When their DC-8 flew into a tropical storm off the coast of West Africa, Aaron Pratt and Tamara Battle realized their lifelong dream -- to study storms and weather systems at their source. During that flight, lightning struck their plane. The resulting storm turned into a tropical depression and ultimately became known as Hurricane Helene, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in 2006.

- Woods Hole Research Center debuts new image mosaic that will strengthen global forest monitoring
11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Much of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Bali will focus on monitoring tropical deforestation and the critical role of remote sensing systems in REDD mechanism development. Using data acquired by the Japanese Advanced Land Observing Satellite, WHRC scientists have completed the first-of-its-kind image mosaic for part of the Amazon. Images acquired globally over narrow timeframes provide for "snapshots" of deforestation, giving leverage to monitoring programs that hinge on timely, accurate forest observations.

- Remote-control MRI exam performed over the Internet
10-24-2006 · EurekAlert!
Radiologists have developed a remote-control mechanism that allows an experienced off-site operator to control a magnetic resonance imaging machine by logging onto the Internet from a personal computer. The quality of the images from remote-control scanning was found to be superior to images obtained by a less-experienced technologist onsite. The technique is outlined in the November issue of Radiology.
