An ambulance man for muscle damage
12-18-2007 · EurekAlert!Researchers of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory's Mouse Biology Unit, Italy, and the Harefield Heart Science Centre of Imperial College London, have now discovered a molecular signal that helps muscle regenerate and protects it from atrophy. In this week's issue of the Journal of Cell Biology they report that the naturally occurring protein is a promising candidate for new strategies in treating muscle damage and wasting.

- Scientists unravel plants' natural defenses
11-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of researchers, led by the University of Sheffield and Queen Mary, University of London, has discovered how plants protect their leaves from damage by sunlight when they are faced with extreme climates. The new findings, which have been published in Nature, could have implications both for adapting plants to the threat of global warming and for helping man better harness solar energy.

- Atrogin breaks down the side effects of statins
11-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
Statins are a popular class of drugs used to successfully combat high cholesterol. However, the rare, but serious, and poorly understood side effect of skeletal muscle breakdown prevents more prevalent use of these drugs. New research in mice has now indicated that atrogin-1 is a critical mediator of statin-induced muscle damage and that inhibiting atrogin-1 function might protect against this unwanted side effect of statins.

- Scientists identify gene responsible for statin-induced muscle pain
11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Statins, the popular class of drugs used to lower cholesterol, are among the most commonly prescribed medications in developed countries. But for some patients, accompanying side effects of muscle weakness and pain become chronic problems and, in rare cases, can escalate to debilitating and even life-threatening damage. Now a study led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, helps explain the source of these problems.

- Faulty cell membrane repair causes heart disease
07-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
During vigorous exercise, heart muscle cells take a beating. In fact, some of those cells rupture and without an efficient repair process those cells would die and cause heart damage (cardiomyopathy). University of Iowa researchers have discovered a specific repair mechanism in heart muscle and identified a protein called dysferlin that is critical for resealing heart muscle cell membranes.
