  1. Researchers identify genes that increase rheumatoid arthritis risk
    10-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers in the United States and Sweden have identified a genetic region associated with increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic and debilitating inflammatory disease of the joints that affects an estimated 2.1 million Americans. The US arm of the study involved a long-time collaboration between intramural researchers of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and other organizations. NIAMS is one of 27 institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health.

  2. RAND study finds asthma and lung disease patients receive half of recommended medical care
    11-13-2006 · EurekAlert!
Patients around the United States with obstructive lung diseases receive half of the recommended medical care, with care varying based on individual conditions, according to a RAND Corp. study issued today.RAND estimates that increasing the number of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients who receive oxygen treatment at home could prevent 27,000 to 57,000 deaths annually and increasing the number of hospitalized asthmatic patients who receive systematic steroids could prevent nearly 2,000 deaths each year.

  3. Cells in the lung clear the air to prevent lung damage
    03-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
Air pollution and tobacco smoke contain oxidants that when inhaled can cause damage to the lungs and contribute to diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In a study that appears in the March issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, identify a new mechanism by which mice are protected against inhaled oxidants.

  4. Nicotine: The link between cigarette smoking and kidney disease progression?
    01-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
The mechanisms by which cigarette smoke may accelerate some types of chronic kidney disease are currently unknown. A new study demonstrates for the first time that human mesangial cells (MC) - cells in the blood vessels of the kidneys -- are endowed with nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) б4, б5, б7, в2, в3, в4 and в5 (cells that interact with the nicotine in tobacco) and may play an active role in the development of certain kidney diseases.

The Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium, the largest ever study of the genetics behind common diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and coronary heart disease, today publishes its results in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics. The study examined DNA samples from 17,000 people across the UK, bringing together 50 leading research groups and 200 scientists in the field of human genetics. Over two years, they analysed almost 10 billion pieces of genetic information.

  7. Researchers find new way to block destructive rush of immune cells
    01-14-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have found a way to selectively block the ability of white blood cells to "crawl" toward the sites of injury and infection when such mobility drives disease, according to a study published today in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. The results suggest a new treatment approach for autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis, and for conditions made worse by misplaced inflammation, like atherosclerosis, stroke and transplant rejection, researchers said.

A genetic variation has been identified that increases the risk of two chronic, autoimmune inflammatory diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). These research findings result from a long-time collaboration between the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases and other organizations.

    11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
People with rheumatoid arthritis have a higher risk for developing heart disease than the general population; however, it is difficult to identify which patients are at increased risk. Researchers at Mayo Clinic have developed a simple approach to predict heart disease in these patients within 10 years of their initial diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
