Health care reform and 2008 elections: New reports examine candidates' plans, public's views
01-15-2008 · EurekAlert!Eighty-one percent of Americans believe that in order to help reach the goal of health insurance for all, employers should either provide health insurance to their workers or contribute to the cost of their coverage, according to survey data released today by The Commonwealth Fund. Nearly nine of 10 (88 percent) Democrats, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of Republicans, and nearly four of five (79 percent) Independents would support such an employer "play or pay" requirement.

A small fraction of health care spending is used to provide publicly supported care to America's undocumented immigrants, according to a RAND Corporation study issued today.The report, which appears in the November edition of the journal Health Affairs, estimates that about $1.1 billion in federal, state and local government funds are spent annually on health care for undocumented immigrants aged 18 to 64 -- amounting to an average of $11 in taxes per US household.
